Students and parents have a number of options regarding the journey to Queen Elizabeth's School:

Bicycle

A large number of students choose to ride their bicycles to QE and need to remember the importance of following the Highway Code. We accept no responsibility for the safety of the student during the journey. This is an open site and students must be made aware that the bicycle sheds are not secure. We discourage strongly the use of bicycles with quick release fittings. These are easily stolen and we can take no responsibility for losses from the cycle sheds. A cycleway is in the process of construction for students wishing to cycle to and from the School from the town centre.

Walking

Many local students choose to walk to QE and need to remember our expectations of courtesy and common sense during the journey. Students must remember that Stone Lane and St Margaret’s Hill are used by lorries and buses and to stay away from the kerb edge. Recently new lights have been put in at the Triangle and The Broads; care must be exercised when crossing at these points

Mopeds, Scooters, Motor-cycles and Cars

Special permission is required from Heads of Year, who keep a register of vehicles. Designated parking areas must be used. Failure to comply may result in loss of this privilege.

School Coaches

Free transport is available to students living outside a 3-mile limit of QE but within our traditional catchment area. Sixth Form students are not entitled to free transport. The right to use this transport can be removed in certain circumstances which includes bad behaviour and failure to carry the right bus pass. Administration of bus passes is provided by Dorset Education Authority at Dorchester (01305 225164)

Family Car

Many parents choose to deliver and collect students at QE. The car park shared with the Leisure Centre at the side of the school should be used to pick and drop off students to avoid congestion and danger.

Public Transport

The use of public transport to and from QE is also possible but students need to be reminded of the importance of high standards of behaviour during the journey.

Code of Conduct

All students will be required to sign the QE Code of Conduct .

Bus Forum

The School Council have taken the initiative in developing relationships with all parties involved in school transport. Over the past few years the Council has hosted meetings involving Dorset County Council, representatives from the Bus Companies, local Councillors and the Police.

The Council publish information about buses within the school and also initiated the Code of Conduct which all students are expected to sign; this not only covers all bus journeys but any school related travel including visits, trips and sports fixtures.

Every term the Council hosts afternoon tea with our bus drivers as another way of sharing experiences and understanding.

The School Minibuses

The school owns three minibuses which meet all current safety regulations. They carry 16 passengers. They may also be hired by any other educational organisation (recognised by the County Youth Service) who has a similar use for them. QE use takes precedence. They may not be used, however, for any purely social or recreational activity which has no connection with the school. One of the minibuses can be adapted to accommodate a wheelchair or carry equipment but this must be highlighted when the booking is made.

The buses may be driven by any member of staff who has met all the qualifications which include completion of the school training course. The minibuses are managed by the Finance Officer from whom a copy of the operating instructions may be obtained. The buses are there to be used. The rules are simple so please use them.

Car Parking

Please note that the main car park must be kept free in the morning and afternoon when school buses use it. Instructions are displayed on the lamp-posts.

Late Transport Provision

We are pleased to inform you, that supported by our Sports College funding, we are able to offer free transport to some of the outlying regions of our catchment area. This is for students who have participated in school based extra curricular activities but not after school detentions. It is also important for you to note, that this service is not for the exclusive use of students participating in sporting activities. Any student involved in revision classes, music, art, drama, maths, design etc may of course make use of this facility.

Late Bus Notice:

Reminder to Parents of students who use the late buses.

Please note that if uptake does not justify running 2 buses, in accordance with the signed agreement by parents only 1 bus will run.  This may impact upon the time that the students arrive at their stop.  If you have any questions or queries, please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Please ask at the Main School office for further details.
