Course Content & Assessment

We also provide the opportunity for the pursuit of excellence and competition for those who desire it, through the medium of an extensive extra-curricular programme (please see link below); which makes use of staff from within the school and coaches from local clubs. Two major events that feature in the year are QE School Games Sports Days and Rock Challenge (a national dance competition). The school is succeeding in county, district, and national competitions in a range of sports (both individuals and teams) and we are equipping students to enter professional careers in sport. We also run the Duke of Edinburgh Award which is hugely successful and attracts around 100 students ever year.

The sports facilities at QE are outstanding, and include an indoor heated swimming pool, fitness suite, floodlit netball/tennis courts plus a 5-court sports hall containing an excellent climbing wall, a floodlit Astroturf hockey pitch, a dance studio, extensive fields and an athlete education centre. We also have 4 dedicated PE classrooms for theory lessons, with interactive whiteboards and laptops.

We are committed to developing Sport through the Community and the Community through Sport. Consequently, we have an excellent relationship with QE Leisure Centre, local sports clubs, including Wimborne Wayfarers, Wimborne Athletics Club and of course our Middle School feeder schools.

Sport Extra
Our extra-curricular programme is extensive. Opportunities are provided for the pursuit of excellence, competition and participation for those who desire it. Pupils are actively encouraged in lessons by our dedicated team to attend extra-curricular clubs to further develop their knowledge and skills in the sports they are studying, as well as having lots of fun and trying something new too.
Consequently, we have an excellent relationship with QE Leisure Centre, local sports clubs, including Wimborne Wayfarers, Wimborne Athletics Club and of course our Middle School feeder schools.

The BTEC National Diploma in Sport is a practical, work related course, it is equivalent in size to 2 A levels. You will learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands as well as written examinations and a task. The course is multi-disciplinary, encouraging the development of a range of skills and emphasising independent learning. It combines theory with practical work, and is taught and assessed through activities closely related to the sports industry. As well as formal teaching and practical activities, the course will include role-play, group work, discussions and debates, research, visiting speakers and visits to external organisations. Learners will complete 6 Mandatory units and 3 Optional units.

The BTEC options offered are the Extended Certificate in Sport which is the equivalent of 1 A level and the Diploma in Sport which is the equivalent of 2 A-levels, both are studied over two years.

In Key Stage 5, students can opt for any one of the following:
Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Physical Education (9PE0)
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Diploma in Sport

The Edexcel Level 2 BTEC in Sport has allowed more students to study physical education and has become a source of inspiration to many of our students who then go on to further their study post-16 here at QE.

Entry Criteria & Progression

Route A: BTEC Sport Level 2 Pass

This qualification is primarily designed to support progression to employment after further study at university. However, it also supports learners who choose to progress directly to employment, as the transferable knowledge, understanding and skills will give learners an advantage in applying for a range of entry level roles or ‘school leaver’ industry training programmes and Higher Apprenticeships in areas such as sport and fitness training, coaching, and sports performance research.
